Media converter is a simple networking device that makes it possible to connect two dissimilar media types such as twisted pair with fiber optic cabling. A media converter is simply two MAUs (media attachment units, also known as transceivers) that can pass data to/from each other. The IMC Networks family of media converters takes the form of modules (e.g. 10Base-T to 10Base-FL) that plug into a chassis that simply provides power. Since media converters are IEEE compliant devices, they implement IEEE data encoding rules and Link Integrity Test.
